As many parents can tell you, toddler sleep problems are very common. When children this age start to explore their world as well as their autonomy, it is not uncommon for them to develop disturbances during their daytime or nighttime rest periods. Although these problems will sometimes solve themselves over time, others persist and become a real challenge for parents and children alike. The good news is that there ARE steps you can take to help identify – and solve – these issues.

If the toddler sleep problems in your home are as simple as nightmares, this is something that most kids will grow out of. Nightmares are the natural result of your toddler beginning to really explore their imagination. This is a problem that can resolve itself in a matter of weeks or months, though it is certainly not a fun time for anyone!

Other toddler sleep problems develop as a result of your child’s growth and their changing bodies. The toddler period is a common age for allergies, and real issues can develop with regards to breathing, swallowing, and snoring. If you suspect that your toddler’s sleep challenges might be physiological in nature, you should make an appointment to see your family doctor.

While some children DO have a physiological reason that they do not sleep through the night, others simply refuse to stay in their own beds. Many children never learn to rest on their own without the help of their parents, and – for many parents – it isn’t until the toddler years that they finally decide that their child needs a bed of their own!

Solving toddler sleep problems of this nature can be a real challenge, but there are definitely some time-tested strategies that have been proven to work. Mostly, they involve a strong will on the part of parents, as you’ll eventually have to insist that your toddler sleep in their own bed.

Many parents of toddlers have found success using “The Sleep Sense Program,” an online resource created by professional infant and child sleep consultant Dana Obleman.

I’m a single father of an adorable five year old girl. I’m pretty happy with my single status! But, I don’t consider myself an experienced parent. Ileana was coming home to spend the summer with me. She is charming, intelligent, lovable, but extremely demanding too. I didn’t have the least clue as to how to keep her engaged. My only thought was what I could do to capture her attention. That was when I came across bounce houses, which helped me make my decision.

She loved playing in the garden and the pool. So I bought a bunch of outdoor play toys, such as inflatable pool floats, bounce houses, and swimming pool games. The D-day arrived! Ileana arrived as per schedule. We drove home n chit chatted for a few hours. I insisted that she take some rest before the party in the afternoon!

My friends came over with their kids! Ileana took to them like a duck to water. And when I took them to the garden, the first person to spot the play houses was Ileana. I had set up two play houses; one resembled a castle and the other a dinosaur. The castle was a big hit! After this, the kids jumped into the pool and played for hours together. I had even got some bounce houses that doubled as water parks to keep the little ones cool! Even the parents were equally pleased! The kids playhouses and pool toys turned out to be a great entertainment for the kids.

We just relaxed in the lawn chairs, while we watched them play. It was a special day! I watched my dear daughter have loads of fun. The best part of outdoor play toys like bounce houses is that it’s a group activity. If you’re too planning to buy kids playhouses for your little one, then try visiting NewCoolToysOnline. They have a great variety of outdoor play toys, Mindwalk toys, and even toddler learning toys.

By Teresa Kolvek

Anyone who has tried to cook a meal while watching a toddler knows how difficult a chore this can be. I know that if I don’t keep my little girl busy and entertained, she’s either off in another room scaling the furniture, clinging to my legs and screaming for attention, or grabbing for hot pots and kitchen shears. So, here are some ways I’ve found to keep her safe and happy while I get dinner ready.

1. I have a cabinet for her to explore. I keep the bottom three shelves of my pantry stocked with things like boxed (sealed) macaroni and cheese, cocoa mix, small canned goods, dry cereal – things she can take out, stack, rearrange, sort, etc. We even got her a little plastic grocery cart ($8.99 at Toys R Us), so she can shop in the pantry to her heart’s content.

2. I’ll set her up in a high chair with a big bowl of corn meal or oats, and some plastic measuring cups and spoons. She has a ball pouring, measuring, and stirring. Note – this can get messy but sweeps up fairly easily; or you could use a drop cloth if your floor is carpeted.

3. My daughter likes to play with refrigerator magnets. Toddler-safe magnets can be lots of fun and provide good entertainment. We bought her a barn magnet puzzle kit (as an alternative to potentially unsafe regular magnets) that plays songs when she matches the pieces; it’s cute and she enjoys it.

4. Stickers are always a good diversion, if you don’t mind peeling them off the cabinets!

5. We will sometimes give her a task that can be done on the floor or in a high chair, like “sorting” the mail. This makes her feel as though she is helping out.

6. I will occasionally get a step stool and let her stand at the counter and help to prepare the meal. She can do things like tear up lettuce, or place chopped vegetables into a bowl, or put shredded cheese on the lasagna.

7. I’ll position her on a stool at the sink and let her “wash” some plastic dishes.

8. I give her a kid-sized broom and let her sweep the kitchen floor (hopefully she‘ll still enjoy this type of thing when she gets older!).

9. We will often turn on the radio so she can sing and dance to the music. Note – this is much more fun (for both of you) if you join in, too!

10. If all else fails, and she doesn’t want to go along with any of these activities, I know it’s because she is hungry and I give her a light snack. You don’t want to spoil their appetite for the upcoming meal, so just be sure to make it something healthy and not too filling, like diced fruit.

Cooking with toddlers is a challenge and a half. Try some of these tips, and also remember to have fun! They’re only this age once.

Counting is an essential part of learning for kids. However it is necessary to make counting for kids interesting so that they like it instead of getting bored.

Counting is an essential part of learning for kids. However it is necessary to make counting for kids interesting so that they like it instead of getting bored. It is an activity that enhances numerical expertise from a very early age. Later on it helps them to tackle complex mathematical problems with ease. There are lots of educational toys meant for children which are designed to hone their different skills. These toys make learning fun and exciting. To help improve counting abilities of children there are math toys which are available in different varieties. Visual and moving elements are incorporated into these toys to make them realistic. Your child will love these toys.

It is imperative that you provide your child a conductive learning environment. Learning requires stimulation and this must be done from a very tender age. Thankfully nowadays you have so many educational toys that can help in the learning process. The beginning part can be difficult for you like choosing the right toy. However you can make this easy by choosing a simple toy and as your child progresses you can bring in complex toys. When you buy math toys (matematik legetøj) for your child keep in mind your child’s interest. Get something which your child would love to play with.

Mathematical learning toys for children should be such that it helps your child become familiar with numbers. Encourage your child to play with the toys and if necessary participate with your child. Gradually as your child progresses bring in toys with maths concepts. Your child will learn basic concepts of arithmetic like addition, sorting, counting etc. When you buy toys always keep in mind your child’s level of ability and the quality of the toy.

There are other learning toys (lærende legetøj) too which help children to understand their daily lessons better. Starting from little toys meant for infants there are different types of toys that cater to children up to their teenage years. Some toys are so challenging that even parents get stumped sometimes. Toys not only entertain kids, but also stimulate their minds. This aids in their development.

If your child has a penchant for music, give him or her toys that play classical music. This will help enhance the imagination of your child. For kindergarten children interactive toys are highly recommended. These help them learn words as well as numbers. There are so many educational toys and each comes with a purpose. Children love toys, so give them toys that make them enjoy as well as learn.

By Saviz Artang Children from age one to age three are considered toddlers.

By Saviz Artang

Children from age one to age three are considered toddlers. It is a time of learning their environment. It is a time for them to explore every corner of every room and everything in between. Remember that the world is new to them and they want to get to know it.

Exploring is a good thing. It is a natural part of their growth. As your toddler explores they gain knowledge, independence, and confidence. It teaches them to use all five of their senses. It teaches them how to put things together, how things work, and enlarges their world moment by moment. They should be encouraged to explore your home, within limits of course.

It can be very difficult to keep up with your toddler and they can get from point A to point B in the time it takes you to turn around for just a second to do your normal daily chores. So you need to have confidence that your home is safe for your toddler to explore, even when you aren’t watching them.

In this article, we will explore areas of your home and help you identify danger zones, then help you fix them so your explorer is safe in his new adventures. Remember, in every room of the house, get on your hands and knees and look at the world from your toddler’s point of view. This will give you a better perspective on the dangers that lurk there.

Let’s start where your toddler starts his or her day, their bedroom.

Is the glass in your toddler’s bedroom made of tempered glass? Non-Tempered glass is dangerous, because it does not break into the tiny pieces that safety glass does. If your toddler’s windows are non-tempered, you can either have new window glass installed or apply security film to them. The film is a much less expensive solution and binds the pieces of glass together if the window is ever broken.

Also, window locks are an essential item to have throughout the house, including your toddler’s room. They allow a window to be open, but not too far. Never leave the window open more than four inches. Gates with vertical slats can also help prevent your toddler from falling out of the window. Screens will not hold them!

Placing your toddler’s bed or crib in the proper place is also important. Experts recommend the space between the bars be no wider than two and three-eighths inches apart. Do not place your toddler’s crib or other furniture under the window or near baseboard or other heaters.

Items left in the crib need to be at a minimum. Make sure your toddler cannot stack or use those items to get out of their crib. You might be surprised how inventive your toddler can be when he or she wants to get somewhere. You’ll turn around and find them in some of the most impossible spots you can imagine.

Look around for any cords or other dangerous items. As your toddler gets more mobile these items present a great danger to them. Make sure you tie all cords and similar items well out of their reach. Any item that is longer than seven inches can be a danger to your toddler. Make sure they cannot get to them and remember your toddler will be more inventive and curious than you might think.

Of course, all medications, baby powder, lotion, and other items must be kept out of reach or stored in a childproof cabinet in your toddler’s room.

Do not use extension cords in your toddler’s room or anywhere else in the house where they can reach them. The danger of strangulation or electrocution is very real and should be taken seriously. Make sure you buy protective covers for all outlets. Having the outlets installed higher up the wall, out of reach of your toddler is an even better solution and much more convenient for you.

Hiding outlets behind furniture that your toddler cannot move or get behind is another solution until you can do more. The advice on electrical outlets also applies to the rest of the house so I won’t be covering that again for every room.

Parents and toddlers both spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so we’ll go there next.

Emergency phone numbers should be located everywhere there is a phone, including the kitchen. In a time of stress it is difficult to think straight or find phone books and the phone numbers you need, so keep them handy at all times.

Not just for toddler safety, but for all homes, there should be a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Take care of that right away, especially if you are a parent.

Toddlers love to climb into things like cabinets, your dishwasher, stove, and refrigerators. Make sure the dishwasher is always latched. Use childproof locks on your cabinet doors and on your refrigerator. They even make latches for your oven.

Speaking of the oven, maybe the most dangerous spot in the kitchen for your curious toddler use a stove guard to protect them. A stove guard keeps them from being able to reach the burners. Cook on your back burners whenever possible. If the controls for the stove are placed on the front of the stove, you will need to remove them.

Train yourself to not use any lower cabinets like under the sink to store hazardous products. Even soap is dangerous. Many soaps contain lye and can poison your child. This applies to all rooms where you store products, including the laundry room. Remember, if it can be reached, it will be reached.

Now do the same for all sharp objects like knives, forks, scissors, pizza cutters, and ice picks. Train yourself to put these items away every time you use them.

If you keep liquor in the kitchen or have a bar in your house where they are kept, make sure your toddler cannot reach it. The tiniest bit of alcohol can make a small child very sick and too much could prove fatal.

Ok, you get an idea of what to do in the kitchen, now let’s head for your bathroom.

A huge number of accidents occur in the bathroom each year affecting both adults and toddlers. It’s a good thing to keep that in mind when preparing your bathroom for safety.

Overhead door locks are available to be purchased and used to keep toddlers out of rooms that are not in use. You should buy these and install them on all bathroom doors.

If you have any low cabinets, get childproof locks for those the same as it was advised for you to do in your kitchen. All medications, ointments, shampoos, soap, and other products should be kept out of your toddler’s reach.

Do not leave hairdryers, electric shavers, radios, and other appliances plugged in. It’s a good idea to keep those out of reach as well because the cords are hazardous to your toddler.

Fire Departments recommend that your water temperature should be set at 120 degrees. Setting your hot water heater higher than that produces the danger of scalding.

Water safety applies in the bathroom, the same as it does for any pool area. A child can easily drown in your bathroom. It only takes two inches of water to create a drowning hazard. Do not leave the tub full of water and buy locks for your toilet seat. Not only can those save your toddler from drowning, it can also help you avoid the headaches of learning the types of things your toddler can find to plug the toilet with.

Your toddler should never be alone in the bathroom. If you are bathing them and have to leave, dry them off and take them with you. Better safe than sorry, as the saying goes.

Your toddler will also spend a lot of time in your family room, den, or living room, so let’s explore that area before we allow them to.

Do you have plants? These seemingly harmless and decorative plants may pose a very dangerous problem for your child. Are you sure that none of your plants are poisonous? Look up information about your plants in an encyclopedia, online, or consult a poison control center to be sure.

Do you have a fireplace? You can purchase guards for fireplaces at many stores. Glass fire screens are not acceptable. They get very hot and can burn your toddler if they touch it. Make sure you create a safe area around the fireplace and that your toddler cannot get into it. Where they can go, they will and the fireplace is an obvious hazard, whether it is lit or not.

Make sure all the doors in your house are safe. If they have metal doorstops, replace them with doorstops that are made entirely of rubber. Doorstops are inviting to young children who play on the floor.

As difficult as it sounds, all furniture should be placed away from the windows. Windows pose a danger to your toddler and they will climb the furniture before you know it.

Is any of your furniture easy to tip over? Floor lamps and other items, which can be turned over easily, are dangerous. Either get rid of them or secure them to a wall somehow.

Also, if your furniture in any room of the house has sharp corners, something needs to be done about it. Either purchase furniture without sharp corners or buy cushions that can be placed over the corners. You can also make your own. Just be sure it’s well padded so the corner cannot cause serious injury.

If you have a home office, I could write a whole article about the dangers for your toddler there. Use the overhead door locks to keep your toddler out of your office if possible. That’s the best advice and might save you having to do a lot of work over again after your toddler gets through with it.

Do you take your toddler into your bedroom?

Make sure all lower drawers and cabinets have childproof locks on them, closet doors have overhead locks, and any chests or other items are also locked.

Jewelry is especially dangerous for your toddler to get their hands on. Cosmetics can be poisonous. Sharp objects like manicure sets or sewing kits can also be dangerous. Again, make sure all cords are tied up where they are out of your toddler’s reach.

Do you have older children? Let’s see what hazards wait in their bedrooms.

You are probably careful about the types of toys you buy for your toddler, but are you careful to make sure they don’t get their little hands on the toys you buy for your older children? You will need your older children to assist you in keeping their toys out of your toddler’s reach. This is a very difficult task, but you have to remember toys made for older children can harm younger ones.

Are there stairs in your home?

You will need to purchase gates for the top and bottom of the staircase if you have a toddler in your home. This is a must. They should have vertical slats no more than two and three-eighths inches apart and should be sturdy and secure. Finding a way to bolt them to the walls is best.

If your banisters have more than four inches of space between supports, then you will have to solve that issue as well. You can use particle board, plywood, plastic or other sheeted product to cover those areas and keep your toddler from slipping between supports and onto the stairs alone.

This article in no way covers all the things you will need to do to make your home a safe place for your toddler to explore, but it is our hope we have gotten you in the right frame of mind to find the rest on your own.

If you are wondering whether to invest some of your hard earned money in some outdoor water toys like a Banzai water slide or a few Super Soakers for your children this summer then just consider the following scenario.

Every child anxiously awaits the last day of school. Finally, when it comes, they are so overwhelmed with excitement that they are often disappointed when the summer has nothing particularly exciting in store for them. This is when summer becomes so stressful for stay at home parents; now, their children are home all day, bored, expecting the parent to provide some form of entertainment. But parents have their own thing to do, and cannot be expected to constantly be taking their children places or playing games with them. So what is a parent to do in these situations? The answer is simple: Super Soakers and inflatable slides.

Outdoor water toys for kids, like Super Soakers and inflatable water slides, offer countless hours of entertainment at a minimal one time cost. When there is limited space or funds, outdoor water toys are the best alternative to installing a pool in the back yard. They entertain children while keeping them outdoors and physically active. Playing with their friends in the front yard is a wonderful way for them to exercise without even realizing it, and add a Super Soaker or inflatable slide to the mix, and your children are sure to have a fun filled day in the sun.

Additionally, you will save costs on entertainment: you will not need to drive your kids around all the time, and you will not have to take them to movies, water parks, and the beach to keep them entertained. Water toys like Super Soakers and water pistols are a wonderful way to keep your child entertained and physically active throughout the long, hot summer months. Outdoor water toys for kids also allow the parent to enjoy their summer with their children without spending all of their income on entertainment expenses and gas.

If you would like to buy an inflatable slide this summer, find out more about the Banzai water slide collection. There are quite a few options to choose from within the Banzai water slide range so whatever you buy, your kids are sure to have a fantastic summer out in the garden.

By Teresa Kolvek Doing any kind of grocery shopping with a toddler can be a real challenge.

By Teresa Kolvek

Doing any kind of grocery shopping with a toddler can be a real challenge. But, with a little preparation and a lot of patience, it can be an enjoyable and entertaining experience. Here are some tips and tricks that work for our family.

1. Bring snacks! This is probably the number one most important thing to remember. A hungry toddler is a cranky toddler, and they get hungry often. I usually bring a plastic zipper bag full of her favorite dry cereal and a sippy cup of water. This will quite often keep her happy for most of the trip through the store.

2. If he gets restless sitting in the cart, let him down to move around for a little while. If you can bring along another adult or an older child to chase him around while you get the shopping done, by all means do so. Sometimes toddlers just need to burn off some energy.

3. Let her help! My girl loves to throw items into the basket. Of course, she will sometimes grab random things off the shelf and throw them in, but I just pull them back out when she’s not looking. This leads in to tip number four:

4. Let him shop! Allow him to pick an item off the shelf and carry it around the store with you. (Just make sure it isn’t breakable!) If it’s something you don’t want to buy, odds are he’ll lose interest in it long before you reach the checkout, whereupon you can either put it back on the shelf or hand it to the cashier apologetically.

5. And finally, be careful what you offer as a means of distraction! One mom I know had a cherry slush hurled at her in the store by a grumpy toddler. The less potential for a mess there is, the better.

Shopping with little ones doesn’t always have to be stressful. Believe it or not, it can even be fun!

Spring has sprung and according to children’s Occupational Therapist, Dagney Hopp, the time has never been better for your kids to get outside and play.

“Outdoor play is a vital part of kids’ learning,’ says Dagney.

“We all know that outdoor exercise is good for our children’s health, but outdoor play also helps kids to build social skills.”

Dagney says that when children’s bodies are busy climbing, swinging and exploring active outdoor fun, their minds are developing too.

“Many a friendship has been forged over a game of chasing, handball and park play, so it’s important that children learn to swing, climb, run and balance so that they can interact successfully with their peers,” she said.

Dagney advises parents to choose safe but challenging activities for children and says that kids between the ages of 2 and 10 usually enjoy outdoor play environments that contain swings, slides, climbers, playhouses, sandboxes and sprinklers.

“It’s great to have fixed play structures at home, but if your backyard doesn’t lend itself to these options, try different places like parks, beaches, zoos, museums, playgroups and swimming pools. These outdoor locations all provide children with new experiences that help them to learn.”

Dagney says that outside play doesn’t always need to include bikes, scooters and swings and she encourages parents to be creative in setting up outdoor games.

“Most children love it when activities they usually enjoy inside are taken outside, so don’t be afraid to painting, music and construction games into the backyard. Kids love it and at this time of year, the fresh air is good for them.”

Dagney says that outdoor play activities that encourage children to cooperate with other kids are among the best ways to help them learn.

So now that winter is over, get your kids off the couch and out into the sunshine. Their minds and bodies will grow stronger when you give them the chance to play.

Dagney’s top tips for outdoor play fun include:

Trampolines
Traditional games like tag, hide and seek
Obstacle courses
Swings
Playground equipment
Planks, low fences to walk along
Cubby house
Construction toys, building blocks
Bikes, scooters and skateboards
Painting
Tricycle
Music and movement tames
Light bats with large balls
Sports, dancing, gymnastics etc.
Gardening
Imaginary play like ‘shops’ and ‘schools’
Water play with buckets, sprinklers, sponges

By Agata Langer What newborns need the most of is love. Eye contact and the warmth of Mom and Dad’s embrace are essential for a baby’s happiness.

By Agata Langer

What newborns need the most of is love. Eye contact and the warmth of Mom and Dad’s embrace are essential for a baby’s happiness. But babies also need to eat and stay warm. This article will show Mom and Dad how to keep their babies warm with clothing tips on what to buy and where to shop for baby and toddler clothing at a discount. So enjoy stocking the nursery with loads of diapers and a change of clothes–you’re going to need them!

Baby Basics

Children will quickly outgrow their britches, so there is no need to buy expensive things at first. Keep in mind that whatever is too big today will fit perfectly tomorrow.

Since newborns will spend the majority of their busy lives sleeping, parents are basically dressing their children for bed. That may sound funny, but there is a lot of truth in it. Fire-resistant cotton and wool will be the best materials for snuggly fit sleepwear. Manufacturers will provide fire protection ratings, so determining whether the clothes are safe or not is an easy matter of reading the label. Well-fit clothes also reduce the risk of fire hazards for children while they sleep. The basic tenet for safe sleepwear is well-fit fire resistant cotton.

Babies will not need shoes until they start walking. Between one and two months, booties and socks will be appropriate footwear. With booties and socks, give the baby’s foot a little room to wiggle and grow. Restricting their movement at this stage could harm their feet. The main point for footwear is to ensure that socks and booties are not too tight.

Staying warm is one of the primary functions of baby clothing. Hats and socks and cotton, sometimes wool, are all perfect for keeping the baby comfortable. If you are unsure about how many layers your child might need, follow a simple guideline: how ever many layers Mom or Dad needs to stay warm is likely the same for the baby. It’s not a perfect science, but it is a good general rule.

Finally, babies may need to be changed several times in one day. That means keeping several T-shirts nearby will be handy. Also prepare to do several loads of laundry. Consider using bibs throughout the day to help protect the baby’s clothes. And there is noting you can do about the truck load of diapers you will need. Some infants will need changing on an hourly basis; some less. So buy disposable diapers in bulk to save a few bucks. Last of all the basics, whites can be bleached-clean as needed.

Last words on baby basics: Young skin can be very sensitive and easily irritated by harsh soaps, buttons and things that rub too closely, and even by some materials. Cotton and wool are safe. Double rinsing clothes in the wash is helpful. Always wash new clothes before dressing a child in them. Using non-allergenic laundry detergent will reduce the risk of irritation. And that’s about it for the basics aside from the fact that parents should be advised that children will try to swallow buttons and things that they can pull off of their clothing.

Gift Baskets for Baby and Toddler Clothing

Including the essentials in a decorative gift basket can be a nice touch at baby showers and birthdays and it’s a great way to provide Mom and Dad with things they need. Deciding what to fill the basket with is simple: Include the things that parents and babies need. However, don’t go too far by filling a basket full of diapers; baby clothing gifts are a convenient time to buy decorated and fun attire.

Here are the things that parents and babies can really use. They want snap-up pants and shirts. Snap-on clothing makes undressing children easier. Instead of slipping clothes over the child’s head, pants and shirts can be snapped on and off very conveniently. Socks are useful. Just remember that young feet need room to wiggle and grow. The same thing is true for booties. And headgear is essential. Hats keep babies warm and they also prevent sun burns. Because kids will swipe, knock, and pull their hat off, get one with a comfortable elastic chin strap.

Everyone knows that babies aren’t always sleeping and eating, they have the all-important photo opps and familial meet-and-greets, so they could use clothes with a little style. Spring colors, fall fashions, Disney designs, athletic themes, denim, and iron-ons are all a lot of fun.
